In a surprise move, Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced on its official Twitter handle that it will take “official action” against a particular parody Twitter account of its current CEO– Dr. Ajay Bhushan Pandey.
The claimed official Twitter handle and the name of UIDIAI CEO is “@ceo_uidai” and “CEO UIDAI” respectively. Note that Aadhaar claims this (@ceo_uidai) to be the official handle of its CEO but the same is not verified by Twitter, at the time of press.
The parody account was created recently in January 2018 and had just 5 followers initially. Soon after UIDAI had announced over Twitter that they will take an “official action” against the parody account, its followers shot up to over 200 from just 5 within 20 hours.
This announcement has surprised expert social media managers as the parody account had just 5 followers and it had clearly mentioned that it is an unofficial parody account of UIDAI CEO in its description. The same has been acknowledged by Aadhaar in a screenshot it shared.
This comes after the recent FIR that was filed by UIDAI against The Tribune and it’s reporter for a critical news story which claimed that Aadhaar data was available for sale for just Rs 500.
While the Editor’s Guild called this action by UIDAI as an attack on free press and a classic case of “shooting the messenger”, the government body in its defence said that “it is an act of unauthorized access.”
